The
convergence of advanced K-beauty technology with medical science is driving a
new wave of growth in the global cosmetics industry. Functional skincare
products known as derma-cosmetics—a portmanteau of “cosmetic” and
“dermatology”—are emerging as a key engine of this transformation. These
products are developed through the active involvement of medical and
bio-science experts in research and development (R&D), with a focus on
improving skin functionality. Originally,
derma-cosmetics were primarily designed to address specific skin conditions
such as acne and atopic dermatitis. In recent years, however, their scope has
expanded significantly to include whitening, anti-aging, and overall skin
health enhancement. As a result, they have evolved into a leading segment
within the Korean cosmetics market. A Market
Expanding Seven Times Faster The
derma-cosmetics sector is experiencing substantially higher growth compared to
the broader skincare market. According to Euromonitor, while the overall
skincare market in Korea recorded an average annual growth rate of 2.1% from
2020 to last year, the derma skincare segment grew at an average annual rate of
15.7% over the same period—approximately seven times faster than conventional
cosmetics. Korea
stands at the forefront of the global derma-cosmetics trend. By integrating
cutting-edge K-beauty technology with advanced medical expertise, the country
has cultivated a diverse and highly competitive portfolio of derma brands,
positioning itself as a global leader in this rapidly expanding segment (Chosun
Ilbo, April 20, 2026). |
