The Rose, a Flower of Women Who Overcome Fear

“Give us bread and roses.” This is the slogan of International Women’s Day. The rose symbolizes the right to participate in politics. On Coming-of-Age Day as well, women are often given roses and perfume as gifts. It invites us to reflect on what it truly means to become an adult woman. In a book written by Celia Lyttelton, the author explains, “Even in a Turkish book from the early 18th century, the rose is described as the flower with the richest language. It is a flower capable of expressing every emotion, from desire and love to affection, interest, and purity.”

Since the beginning of human history, the rose has been one of the most beloved flowers and has long been treasured as a source of fragrance. The Persians perfected the technique of distilling roses, and records from the Roman era show that people loved the scent of roses so much that they created rose-water fountains and even sprinkled rose essence on food.

Today, roses are classified into more than 10,000 varieties, each possessing its own subtle fragrance differences. Moreover, when blended with ingredients such as sandalwood, neroli, and patchouli, the rose transforms into an endlessly versatile and multifaceted ingredient. For this reason, even renowned perfumers often admit that creating a fragrance centered on the rose, or approaching it from a new perspective, requires great effort.

Nevertheless, perfumes containing the scent of roses continue to be launched and loved by people around the world because of the romantic symbolism that roses embody (Hyangjang, No. 619).

Anti-Aging Begins from the Top of the Head

Maintaining firm and youthful skin with premium skincare products is important, but true anti-aging begins from the crown of the head. To preserve glossy hair and a healthy scalp, it is essential not to overlook proper hair anti-aging habits.

If your scalp and hair, once unaffected by all kinds of treatments, have started causing problems, it is time to begin serious hair anti-aging care. For example, if you skip just a few meals because you feel you have gained a little weight and suddenly notice a significant reduction in hair volume, or if your hair becomes dry and frizzy after missing hair essence for just one day, or if even a small amount of stress causes pimples to appear on your scalp, these are all warning signs. Simply changing your shampoo will not solve these issues. Systematic anti-aging care is urgently needed.

Although the scalp is covered by hair, making its aging difficult to observe with the naked eye, it is known to age about six times faster than facial skin. In addition, increasing levels of stress, fine dust, and ultraviolet rays accelerate the aging process of the scalp even further. When the skin on the crown of the head loses elasticity due to aging, it can also contribute to wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. Therefore, scalp care is essential not only for healthy hair but also for maintaining a youthful face.

The biggest factors that accelerate scalp and hair aging are chemical treatments such as perms and hair coloring. These procedures alter the protein structure of the hair and damage the cuticle, causing hair to become dry, brittle, split, or even break easily. Sadly, visible signs of hair aging such as hair loss and gray hair cannot be completely prevented. However, with careful attention and consistent care, the aging process can be slowed down. Just like daily skincare routines, steady and continuous effort is necessary (Hyangjang, No. 619).

K-Beauty Exports Become the World’s No. 2, Surpassing the United States

South Korea’s cosmetic exports ranked second in the world for the first time last year, driven by the growing global popularity of K-beauty. In 2024, Korea ranked third after France and the United States, but it surpassed the U.S. within just one year. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea’s cosmetic exports reached a record high of USD 11.4 billion (approximately KRW 17.3 trillion) last year. This represents an 11.8% increase compared to the previous record of USD 10.2 billion in 2024. France ranked first with USD 24.3 billion, while the United States ranked third with USD 10.8 billion.

Korea’s cosmetics trade surplus, calculated by subtracting imports from exports, also exceeded USD 10 billion for the first time, reaching USD 10.1 billion (approximately KRW 15.3 trillion) last year. This accounts for about 13% of Korea’s overall trade surplus of USD 78 billion, demonstrating that the cosmetics industry has become one of the nation’s leading export industries.

Export destinations have also diversified. The United States became the largest importer of Korean cosmetics for the first time last year. In addition, the number of export destination countries increased from 172 in 2024 to 202 last year. An official from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated, “The superior technology, strict quality control, and rapid market responsiveness of Korean cosmetics have proven successful in the global market” (Chosun Ilbo, May 23, 2026).

30s! Aging Agony

After enduring endless emergency disaster alerts and fine dust warnings from smartphone apps, you head out to work day after day, only to return home with skin that feels completely exhausted. Harmful environmental factors cause redness and irritation, while drastic seasonal climate changes lead to an increasing number of transitional skin troubles such as acne. After working late into the night, the deepening smile lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows become even more noticeable the next day. At times like these, even skincare products you have always used may suddenly feel irritating, and in severe cases, your skin may feel hot and become visibly flushed.

SOLUTION

The key to healthy skin is maintaining the proper oil and moisture balance. Generally, skin is considered to be in its ideal condition when it contains about 20–30% oil and 70–80% moisture. When this balance is maintained, the thin protective oil layer on the skin surface prevents moisture from evaporating through the stratum corneum, helping the skin retain optimal hydration.

Moreover, the thirties mark the beginning of visible aging, making this an important period to focus on early anti-aging skincare. Products equipped with anti-pollution functions that protect the skin against various harmful urban environmental factors can provide additional reassurance and care (Hyangjang, No. 619).
